Dear Dave,
This is a difficult letter to write. Not that I have complaints about your company. Far from that. Your people are wonderful. They are all thoughtful and helpful in every way.
I have, essentially, lost half my house. It is grievous to think about. And I have to think about it if I am to write it down. Until today I have been working outdoors every possible day to repair and restore my yard that was torn up from my back door to the barn when the new septic system was put in. I would rather plant flowers or mow grass than deal with my ruined basement.
I wish to commend you and your staff on your compassionate and timely response to my unfortunate situation. When a very heavy rainstorm collapsed my septic tank, leaving a 10 foot deep hole beside my house and causing waste and water to back up into my basement, I had no idea what to do. This was 10 A.M. My neighbor said to call Yellow Van. "They are the best and they are available 24/7."
She also gave me the name of a good septic service.
I called Yellow Van. Your company was overwhelmed with calls at this time, but they put me on their list immediately and thought helpers could be out the next day to evaluate and to spray anti-microbials.
I could not contact the recommended septic service. Their phone was always busy. So I called another business. They sent a person to "pump out the septic tank to prevent further backup into the basement." He came about 4 P.M. He couldn't pump out anything! He said, "The mud that was in the hole had to go somewhere. It went inside the collapsed tank." He couldn't get his hose out of the tank, so he reversed his pump. The hose came out. He said I would need a new septic tank. His boss would give me an estimate the next day. And he left.
Then my neighbor and I looked in the basement. Now sewage was coming out of the bathroom sink, toilet and toilet tank, and floor drain in the furnace room. Waste had shot up to the top of the shower stall and all over the shower door. Waste was clear across the bedroom carpet and also into the office. We could hear water running. We didn't know where it was coming from. Maybe rainwater was coming in. I called the septic service whose employee had just left and told him this. He said he couldn't do anything about it, that he would be out in the morning to bid on a new septic tank. I repeated, "Water is running in the basement. What is it?" He said I should have told his driver before he left. Well, I didn't know the problem before he left.
So now the original problem had escalated. I finally was able to contact the recommended septic service. This gentleman came, found the source of the running water and stopped it. Waste that blew into the house from the first person's pump had clogged the toilet so it couldn't shut off. This water had by now spread the waste throughout the basement, contaminating everything. It was about 7 P.M.
It was still raining. Bad roads made it impossible for Yellow Van to get here the next day. I went to my daughter's home at Hershey NE for five days, waiting for the weather to clear. During this time, Yellow Van kept in touch with me by phone. As soon as I got back home, they were here to spray. An excellent crew worked here the next 3 days to remove all contaminated floor coverings, paneling, sheet rock and furniture. These cheerful guys made me feel like everything would be O.K. someday, even if I did lose half of my house. They left dehumidifiers running for another 5 days to be sure all was completely dry. And it is. All air ducts and returns have also been cleaned. I know my house is safe from mold and it is healthy to live here.
I have learned a valuable lesson. Recommendations are important. I certainly recommend Yellow Van. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Anne L.
